i got

published!!!

actually i’ve been published since april 21st but i’ve been dealing with the end of the term and final projects and just shutting off my brain for a bit but i managed to write a prose poem about hurricanes because the season is starting and i’m flashing back to my childhood because my major poetry project this year was poems about my life and yeah

after that i just started googling where to submit climate change poetry – maybe even that exact phrase – and i came across The Eco Justice Project.

after reviewing the submissions and the website info and finding out the site is run by a Bahamian as well, i knew this was the home for prayer to. in submissions itchin i literally spoke about how i finally decided to stick to my guns about writing in Bahamian dialect and here i find a site run by a Bahamian accepting poetry submissions.

i emailed prayer to in, and it got accepted!

prayer to is a prose poem written in Bahamian Dialect that seeks to capture both the routine and abnormality of growing up in a place regularly affected by climate disasters. It asks for an escape, where people’s lives don’t have to be put at risk each year, while knowing that if climate change isn’t addressed the future will be grim. A play on the ‘Our Father Prayer’ seemed appropriate as now it feels the only place to seek help is the powers above our heads.
