Poetry

Vanitas Still Life by Jan van Kessel the Elder, Courtesy National Gallery of Art, Washington

ring stones is a prose poem written in Bahamian Dialect that speaks to the morbid anticipation of an unhappy, possibly abusive marriage. Coming from a place where marital rape is still legal and not a grounds for a court case or divorce marriage has always been this invisible guillotine above my neck. With barely any examples of good, healthy marriages to look up to I’ve always sat in anxious anticipation of the concept.
