Little do the readers know because I’m bad at updating that I did indeed go and mail my friend a letter. And I got one back in return!
The unexpected joy of opening the mailbox and finding a parcel inside is quite addicting. Coming from The Bahamas, we never really had a postal system to begin with. I guess the logistics of sending parcels between islands and houses was too much for our fledgling country to handle.
The most I grew up with are mailboats, which came in once a week and you either arranged with a guy to sort through and look for your stuff and throw them on the back of his truck or drive down to the docks yourself. Because of the tides and shipping and whatever I still see family from back home posting their “does anyone know when the mailboat will be in” whatsapp statuses.
Bills? You gotta pick them up or call it in.
Letters? No, that’s what the phone is for.
Even with the modernization and globalization of the wider world to order from amazon we have to ship to a place in the states, have them sort everything, send it over on a plane, have them sort everything, then you have to drive down to their crowded warehouse and stand in a super long ass line and hope that the workers can find your package. It doesn’t always work out. RIP to my Becker Accounting Textbooks. It all worked out because I left the auditing career.
All this to say, the Government decided to demolish the post office in 2018 (“Post office building to be imploded“). Currently, the post office is being run out of the Town Centre Mall but I couldn’t tell you anything about it.
Door to door mail delivery though? Impossible.
So to say I’m still amazed that I can open my door and find a package outside is still mind blowing to me.
Finding a letter from a friend? Even better.
I can’t wait to write back. I’m been holding onto it for a while. Savouring like an fine aged wine. (If I just found an open bottle of wine in my fridge and I can’t remember when I opened it, is it safe to drink? I’m having a glass right now so if it isn’t it’s too late to save my life).
But yes, I’m a letter writer now and a letter receiver. I have to up my stationary game though because where do you even find envelopes like that? Brother I’m grabbing mines from the dollar store.
Got anything to say?
