Poetry

Vanitas Still Life by Jan van Kessel the Elder, Courtesy National Gallery of Art, Washington

tending is a prose poem originally drafted during the first week my first creative writing class at Okanagan College. Kerry Gilbert wanted to make poetry seem more accessible to the class and you know what, she did. No theme, no rules, a prose poem to ease us into the genre. I procrastinated then I sat down and then I wrote tending.

tending attempts to grasp the eerie out of body physically demanding experience of the funeral procession. The mixture of anxiety, sadness, relief that all comes bundled with death. That close distance of being presently unpresent.

You can read tending in Issue 4 of Arrival Magazine!
